Preparing to Take Tests

A. Developing good study habits

  1. Establish and maintain a positive attitude toward attending school, studying, learning, and taking tests.

  2. Know your purpose for everything.
  3. Concentrate on what you are studying.
  4. REMEMBER: The more effectively you study, the more you learn.
  5. Learn to listen.
  6. Learn to follow directions.
  7. Improve your reading skills.
  8. Practice using standard oral English.
  9. Be sure you understand your assignments.
    a. Write your class assignments in your notebooks.
    b. Participate in the class discussions and other activities.
    c. Ask questions that will help you complete your class assignments.
  10. Complete all class assignments to the best of your ability.
  11. Build an extensive vocabulary.
  12. Read a variety of books, magazines and newspapers.
  13. Break up the material over several nights rather than cramming the night before.

B. Prepare yourself physically and emotionally for the test.

  1. Build self confidence throughout the school year by regular study habits.
  2. Get a good nights sleep before the test.
  3. Start the day with a good breakfast.
  4. Get to school on time.
  5. Visit the restroom before entering the classroom.
  6. If you wear glasses, be sure to bring them.
  7. Relax before the test and tell yourself you will do your very best.
  8. Concentrate on the test items and try not to let your mind wander.
  9. Don’t worry about what your neighbor is doing.
  10. Remember that you want to show how much you know, take your time and take it seriously.
