Working with students, co-workers, parents etc. will always be a part of Special Education. Knowing how to get along better with others will allow for better relationships with everyone. Remember the student/child is the number one priority, making everyone around you comfortable is the first step in having successful relationships.
Ten Ways to get along better with others
1) Guard your tongue. Say less than you think 2) Make promises sparingly. Keep promises faithfully 3) Never let an opportunity pass to say a kind word 4) Be interested in others, their interests, work and families 5) Be cheerful 6) Keep an open mind. Discuss, do not argue. Learn to disagree without being disagreeable. 7) Discourage gossip 8) Be careful of other’s feelings 9) Pay attention to ill-mannered remarks about you. Live so that nobody will believe them. 10) Do not be too anxious about getting credit. Just do your best and be patient

This poem was written by a former student for a respect festival we had at the school. She presented her poem to the entire school as well as family and friends in attendance. This is printed just as she had it over 7 years ago. I loved it so much I had to share it.
RAINBOW COLORS
The world is full of hate and hurt People treating others like crap and dirt It shouldn’t matter the color of skin Or whether someone is fat or thin Prejudice is not the way to be We were all just made differently If only we could all pull together Like rainbows colors after bad weather Then everyone would see We aren’t so different you and me
